Affiliate marketing can be a very lucrative online business
model. It gives you the ability to work, not only from home, but
anywhere you can lug your lap top and can get a decent internet
connection.
The trick is to set up your affiliate business
correctly...
from the start to set yourself on the path for success. Too many people get this wrong and they end up floundering from one strategy to the next, making a sale here or there but never gaining enough traction to start building a sustainable business.
from the start to set yourself on the path for success. Too many people get this wrong and they end up floundering from one strategy to the next, making a sale here or there but never gaining enough traction to start building a sustainable business.
Just in case
you are brand new to affiliate marketing, it is simply selling products
you don't own in exchange for a commission. It's like being a commission
only sales person, although in this case you're only selling online.
The
biggest and most well known affiliate program belongs to Amazon. It
works like this. You go to Amazon and sign up for their affiliate
program. You can then get a special URL or link that you can use on the
web. Whenever someone clicks on that link to Amazon and buys something
you get paid a commission.
While Amazon is the biggest and most well known, almost every business online nowadays has some sort of affiliate program.
You
can check out Clickbank.com for digital products like ebooks or
membership sites or a site like Commission Junction, CJ.com, for almost
anything else. CJ represents thousands of companies and manages their
affiliate programs for them.
Anyway, what you should be after with
your affiliate business is to build a sustainable business. That's the
first mistake many people make. They sign up for affiliate programs, get
a link and bounce from one traffic idea to another trying to get people
to click on that link.
To make matters worse, they sign up for
many programs and promote a wide variety of products that have nothing
to do with one another, that aren't even in the same market niche. This
is like trying to run and build a whole bunch of different businesses at
the same time. It's tough enough to build one business, let alone
fifteen or twenty!
So before you get started signing up for all
those affiliate programs, take some time to think about what kind of
business you want to build. Don't chase commissions all over the place.
You'll end up spinning your wheels.
Think of affiliate marketing
like any other business you would run. You're solving problems for
customers. More importantly, you should be thinking about repeat
customers!
You need a market that spends money! To get started,
think big; health and fitness, investing, self improvement, dating and
attraction, golf, markets like that. These markets have proven to have
rapid buyers that are looking for very important things - to have a
problem solved, to find success, whether it's with relationships or
making money, as well as overcoming fear or avoiding failure.
Yes, there is a lot of competition but that just means money is being spent.
There's
another important point that goes along with that. There may be a huge
market for getting rid of warts and you might make a nice income in
promoting an affiliate product for doing exactly that. But we want a
nice sustainable business with a consistent and growing income. So that
not only means rabid buyers, but it means repeat buyers!
It can
cost a lot of money to get a customer. The profit is in getting
customers that you can sell to again and again. The markets mentioned
above have both rapid and repeat buyers.
How many golf enthusiasts
or serious investors buy just one book on golf or investing? How about
the exercise nuts, do they only ever buy one workout program? Of course
not!
This brings us to the other key point of successful affiliate
marketing. Make them your customers! This means don't just throw your
affiliate link out there hoping to get sales here or there.
Focus
on getting people on to your own email list so you can sell to them over
and over again! The most valuable thing Amazon owns, or any company for
that matter, is their in house customer list.
When Amazon
launches a new Kindle, they will spend money on a marketing campaign!
But the greatest opportunity they have to kick start sales is that they
can send out a simple email to their MILLIONS of customers announcing
the new Kindle!
That is extremely powerful and how you build a
sustainable and growing business, whether you are selling your own
products or using affiliate marketing.
This means getting them on
your list by driving traffic to a page you own where they can give you
an email in exchange for something free, but valuable, like a pdf report
on '7 Ways to Add 30 Yards to Your Golf Drive in 19 Minutes!' What
golfer wouldn't want that? Now you can send out emails with valuable
tips and news on golf, while mixing in promotions for golf clothing,
golf vacation packagers, new clubs, DVD programs and more.
THAT is valuable and THAT is how you cash in on affiliate marketing
